MIAMI [ ABN NEWS ] — The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) Scholarship Fund today announced the start of the period for journalists in the Western Hemisphere to apply for scholarships for postgraduate study in Latin America, the Caribbean or North America.

The scholarships, worth $20,000 each, cover an academic year at a university for journalists from Latin America or the Caribbean to study at accredited schools of journalism in the United States or Canada, while those from North America do so at Latin American or Caribbean universities.

Applicants should be journalists (or students in the final year of a university journalism course), be aged between 21 and 35, and be fluent in the language of the country where they are going to study.

The deadline for submitting applications is January 31, 2013. Applicants to be awarded the scholarships will be chosen during the IAPA Midyear Meeting to be held March 8-11 next year in Puebla, Mexico.

“We invite young journalists to submit their application and take advantage of this opportunity to train and widen their professional knowledge,” said the chairman of the IAPA Scholarship Fund Board of Governors, Jorge Andrés Saieh of Copesa, Chile.

Since the establishment of the Scholarship Fund in 1954 the IAPA program has benefited more than 400 journalists in the Americas.
